Guide to Yucca

Yucca Elephantipes - This plant is also known as the Yucca Guatemalensis owing to its central American origins of Mexico, Belize, Costa Rica, Honduras and of course Guatemala. It is the tallest of the Yucca species of the family Agavaceae. Other common names for this species of plant include giant Yucca, soft-tip Yucca and spineless Yucca. It usually has a thick, single trunk with strap like, spineless leaves that can grow up to 1.2 metres in length.

The plant can also produce flowers in the summer which are followed by brown fleshy fruits. In their natural habitat they can grow up to 9 metres in height, with a spread of 4.5 metres but as an indoor plant they are usually tempered to be much smaller and more amenable. Like many green leaved plants from the tropics they prefer to be indoors in colder climates but can thrive even when neglected and do not require frequent watering. In fact if you overwater them they are at risk of rotting.
