Guide to Ficus

Ficus - Ficus is a genus of about 850 species woody trees and shrubs belonging to the Moraceae family. Native to the tropic regions, Ficus are more commonly or collectively known as Fig Trees. Perhaps the best known and recognisable of the Ficus trees, the Ficus Benjamina or Weeping Fig as it is commonly known as, has been recognised on many occasions as an effective plant for lowering the amount of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC’s) in indoor climates which can harm our health. Native to south and Southeast Asia the Weeping Fig is the official tree of Bangkok, Thailand and can reach anything up to 30 metres tall in its natural habitat.

Its foliage consists of graceful drooping branches with healthy and glossy leaves that are oval shaped with a acuminate tip. Whilst in its natural climate the Ficus Benjamina is often cultivated for use in stately homes and grand gardens, the years have also seen it become one of the most popular and well loved house and office plants. The reason for this growth in popularity stems from the Weeping Figs tolerance of poor growing conditions however this office plant is quire sensitive to the cold so should not be placed where it is subject to a draft.

Another notable species is the Ficus Longafolia, a more bushy variety that is great when used in large open spaces. This bushy specimen has individual long thin leaves that are evenly distributed through the plant has a more traditional shape to it than some other more contemporary Ficus species.
