Euphorbia Ingens
(Cowboy Cactus / Candelabra Tree)

The Euphorbia Ingens is a genus belonging to the family Euphorbiaceae, and has over 200 species making it one of the most diverse genera within the plant world. It was given its name in honour of Greek physician Euphorbus who used a Resin Spurge to cure the swollen belly of King Juba II (52-50 BC - 23 AD).

Typically found in Africa and the Americas the Euphorbia genus has a liking for tropical or subtropical climates and is commonly referred to as ‘Spurges’. The term ‘spurge’ comes from the old Middle English word ‘espurge’ which means ‘to purge’ and is given to the Euphorbia due to the fact that the plants sap is often used as a purgative.

Plant maintenance

Euphorbias are annual or perennial and great care should be taken when handling them as the sap is poisonous and the sharp spines may cause injury. The Euphorbia Ingens is sometimes referred to as the ‘Cowboy Cactus’ after its familiar shape has become a backdrop for numerous Wild West movies. Other names for the Ingens include the ‘Candelabra Tree’ thanks to the plants angled branches that form the shape of an upside down candelabra tree.

The Euphorbia Ingens is a perfect choice for anyone looking to create an impact with an interior design plant. Not only is the plant iconic but its striking appearance creates a contemporary and fashionable reception plant especially when teamed up with a stylish and modern container.
